About us

The Leicestershire Chorale is a chamber choir of about 40 voices which performs regularly with professional orchestras in Leicestershire and beyond. Generous sponsors and patrons make possible this valuable extra dimension to the Chorale's concerts. Main concerts are usually performed in Leicester but recitals, including some lighter music, are given throughout the county in country houses and village churches.

Chorale has been acclaimed by music critics as one of the region's leading amateur choirs. It performs a wide range of choral music by composers from the 15th to the 21st centuries. Outreach projects include workshops for members of the public and special choral events for school students (complementing our YFAV scheme).

Recent programmes have included gems of English and European choral music, including Byrd's Laudibus in Sanctus, Britten's Hymn to St Cecilia and Vaughan Williams' Three Shakespeare Songs; Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers; oratorios by Handel and Bach balanced by more recent works: 'Timepiece', commissioned by the Chorale from Matthew King, Kodaly's Missa Brevis, Rachmaninov's Vespers and Stravinsky's Les Noces.

Chorale's Silver Jubilee took place in April of 2003, celebrating the work of two outstanding educationalists, our late President, Andrew Fairbairn (then Director of Education) and then Director of Music, Peter Fletcher. Chorale continues to play a leading role in supporting choral singing in schools and colleges through the YFAV project. The 2008 project was a concert in De Montfort Hall with the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra, featuring Dvorak's Te Deum and Andrew Carter's Benedicite.

New Members

If you have a good voice and reasonable music reading ability, you will receive a warm welcome from this friendly choir. Students may be interested in applying for one of our choral scholarships, and their teachers may be interested in joining as well - the Chorale has traditionally had close links with the education sector. Auditions are relaxed but designed to find out what you can do best. Rehearsals are a mixture of hard work and good fun, as we strive for high standards of performance. We place great value on enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn and improve. We need singers who share our ambition to perform a wide variety of demanding music and of course, in a small choir, every voice counts. Our members are drawn from all over Leicestershire and Rutland. If you are interested please contact the secretary by email, or write to:
