Chinese Cultural Exchange

Chinese Cultural Exchange

Saturday 3rd February 2018, Leicester Grammar School

The most recent YFAV event was an exciting day of workshops, in association with the Rainbow Language Club. This was a unique opportunity for children from across the county to explore the cultural heritage of China and Britain through folk song.

Around thirty young people were able to experience Britain’s choral tradition alongside an introduction to the fascinating and colourful Chinese language. Through a series of workshops, participants learnt 3 Chinese folk songs, with language coaching by David Cowen and Yan Yau, as well as a British folk song: ‘Early One Morning’, arranged by Keith Roberts. The riches of Chinese music and art were further brought to life through calligraphy workshops and encounters with Chinese traditional instruments.

After a short break in which we enjoyed some splendid Chinese food, the day culminated in a short performance to an appreciative audience. All singers came together to perform the 4 songs learnt during the workshops, and the Leicestershire Chorale sang a further 2 British Folk Songs. In addition, there was music by the Chinese instrumentalists, which even involved some audience participation!
