In Illo Tempore
March 2 @ 7:45 pm - 10:00 pm
Music by Monteverdi and the Franco-Flemish School
With David Cowen Organ
We begin our concerts of 2019 with a lesser-known but rather glorious Parody Mass by Monteverdi, which draws its musical motivic inspiration from a six-part motet by the much earlier Franco-Flemish composer Nicolas Gombert. Whilst the mass ostensibly looks back to the stile antico (old style) of Palestrina, and of course Gombert himself, it is still imbued with a stylish touch that hints at music found in Monteverdi’s Vespers and other later works.
We pair the mass and its parody motet with other settings from the Franco-Flemish school by Josquin and Adrian Willaert, whose texts all begin with the same opening words: In Illo Tempore ‘At that time’.
